What is the difference please?
Are either of these radios any good or should I buy something else?
Thanks

These are the same radio, the name just stated slightly differently.
I have one, but your choice would depend on a combination of many
factors, and comes down to personal taste. Why not do a Google search
for similar threads and see what others have offered as advice in the
recent past? This is a controversial subject...

the Satellit 800 Millenium is one product. there is no difference between
it and itself :^).
> Are either of these radios any good or should I buy something else?
This isn't an independent review, just a summary of the arguments I've
read here over the last couple of years.
You'll get a lot of opinions on this one. People who think Chinese
electronics are cheap junk (the way people used to think of Japanese
electronics) are not very happy with this box. In particular, old-timers
tend not to like it because the case and knobs are made of molded plastic
rather than machined steel.
There are also the people who think that anything coming from China
is nasty and evil just because it comes from China, but I'll assume
you're capable of sorting that nonsense out for yourself.
The people at R. L. Drake & Co. are said to have had a hand in the
design of this set, and it's been said that at least some parts of
it are effectively a Drake R-8 in a different box. So apparently the
guts of the box were designed by people who knew what they were doing,
at least to some extent.
One criticism that sticks in my mind is that the power supply filtering
is not very good, but presumably this can be gotten around by operating
it from batteries.
I think the look and the feel of the box are characteristic of the
mainland Chinese electronics industry, and contrast strongly with other
Grundig models prior to the YB305, or Sony or Sangean products. The LCD
display is reminiscent of the Radio Shack DX-375.
A couple of things about mine that I'm not ecstatic about: I don't mind
the plastic tuning knob, but I do mind that it's not well-balanced around
the shaft. This is not the only radio I own with an unbalanced plastic
knob (I don't know, maybe it's impossible to make well-balanced molded
plastic knobs), but it's particularly irritating to me because it's
huge and mounted on the front panel (where I usually want to tune it
with a fingertip), rather than small and on the side as it would be on
a portable, where I usually am not tempted to use it.
I think the operating paradigm of the tuning buttons is highly
nonintuitive. YMMV.
and as a final nitpick, it seems to me that a person familiar with the
Roman alphabet would know better than to try to kludge together the U
in "USB" with an L and an I.
But, if you like luggable radios, and you only have $500 to spend, this
is probably your best bet. Oh, did I forget to mention that this box is
nearly the size of a small microwave oven?
If you plan to leave it in a single place, and operate it off wall
current, you'd probably be a lot happier with a Drake, or a Lowe, or
a Palstar - or something else if you've got more money yet.

I think the similarity is between the SAT800 and the Drake SW8, not R8.

Not at all true. The Sat 800 is completely based on Drake's SW8 receiver,
NOT the R8. Basically, the Sat 800 is an 'Texas size' SW8 (with a larger
audio amp and speaker). There are no Grundig designed circuits inside and
it's made in China, whereas the SW8 is made in the US.

I've owned my 800 Millenium since last December and the more I use it, the
more I like it.
What confuses me still, however, is that some people hate it while others
love it (like me). I'd buy another if this one were stolen.
Some of the comments made by other owners seem to suggest that the very
early production 800's varied in production quality, but again, mine doesn't
have any faults so maybe I got lucky.
I have also seen elsewhere that some don't like the tuner knob. But it's
large size with the weight inside allows it to spins freel with one finger
on the indent. So I don't understand the problems other people have with
that.
Whatever.

I don't think 'HATE' comes into it. It's just that, the S-800 was
supposed to be a ground-breaking, super machine if you believed the
hype. What it turned out to be was a cheap, chinese assembled copy of a
Drake SW-8 packed into a disgusting plastic grey case, that weighed
slightly less than a Panzer tank.
Why do you think there are so many outlets offering 'refurbished'
models. Probably because a very substantial number were rushed out with
either no, or very flawed quality control checks. I know a guy who owned
an S-650 and S-700 (both excellent radios) and was desperate to get an
800. He went through 3 faulty models, gave up and bought an ICOM R-75.
One guy in this NG had FIVE faulty S-800's, causing him much grief and
inconvenience. Even the model Radio Netherlands was given to review was
faulty (great PR huh !).
It seems though, that Lextronics/Grundig whatever, have got their act
together belatedly and sorted out the teething troubles that marred some
early production models. If you have a working model, then it is a
decent radio, with nice audio, although I think I'd rather spend a
little more on an ICOM R-75.
Some people like those heavy duty, chunky machines, but I really feel
that the look of the S-800 is tacky and cheap and I think my 10 year old
Sony 2010 performs on a par with the S-800 for substantially less cost,
albeit with quieter, more trebly audio. This is just my opinion. Many
like the S-800 because of the audio quality. If someone gave me an S-800
as a present, I wouldn't send it back ! It's not hate, it's just that
the hype surrounding this radio promised so much more.

martin

I don't know if the promise was really ever there. When the first glimpses
of the receiver were shown, many of us saw immediately that it was a
repackaged SW8. This was before the partnership with Drake was common
knowlege. There is no 'Grundig' in the Sat 800. Those expecting a German
designed radio, with any heritage to the superb Grundig line just didn't
read the comments.
Having said that, I agree that the basic SW8 electronic design is excellent.
I own an SW8 and it's a superb program radio.

To alleviate your dislike of the lightweight plastic tuning knob feel
you might try filling the cavities with bbs or lead shot and sealing
it over with candle wax. Works fine, nice touch for a very good
receiver.
